Greg Smith, Steger Chief of Police is a 30-year veteran in law enforcement. He served as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army. Smith’s unit was responsible for Customs Operations in Europe, including black marketing and drug suppression. Chief Smith completed 27 years with the Lemont Police Department in a variety of assignments, including patrol, investigations and administration. Smith retired from Lemont Police Department as a commander. Smith went on to the Beecher Police Department, where he served as Chief of Police for three years. Chief Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Benedictine University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Smith is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Chief Smith and his wife Lisa have four children and reside in nearby Beecher, Illinois.

Chief Fillion started his career at Steger Estates Fire Production District under Chief Joyes as a firefighter and EMT-B in 1993 and has been a paid on call firefighter ever since. After three years, Chief Fillion joined the Steger Fire Department under Chief Joyce. He continued to grow in his career, from Maintenance Officer to Lieutenant to Assistant Chief until achieving the top role as Steger’s Fire Chief.

Today, Chief Fillion is a part time Fire Chief and a full time union sheet metal worker. He also instructs Firefighter Basic classes at Prairie State College.

Steger’s Fire Chief truly loves his craft and continues to learn and grow. To date, he has been trained in Firefighter Basic & Advanced, hazmat operation, technical rescue awareness, confined space trench awareness, instructor one and two, and NIMS and has also taken officer development courses.
